ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Exophora

Okay kiddo, have you ever played the game "I spy" with someone? How you look around and try to find the thing they are talking about? Well, sometimes when people are talking or writing, they might mention something but not say exactly what it is. This is called "exophora" and it's like playing "I spy" with language.

For example, let's say I tell you "I saw a beautiful bird in the tree today, it had really bright feathers." Now, I didn't say exactly what kind of bird it was, but you can guess based on the clues I gave you. That's exophora! I'm not directly saying what I saw, but I'm giving you enough information to figure it out.

Exophora can be tricky sometimes, but it can also make language more interesting and exciting. So next time someone says something and you have to guess what they're talking about, you'll know it's called exophora!
