ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Exotic star

Imagine you're playing with glitter at a party. You know the glitter is made of really tiny pieces. The same is true for stars. They're made up of tiny pieces too like atoms and dust.

Some stars are different from regular stars you might see in the night sky. They're called exotic stars. These stars are way different because they're made of different things and have different characteristics.

One kind of exotic star is called a quark star. Quark stars are smaller than regular stars and are made of tiny particles called quarks. Quarks are even tinier than atoms! Scientists think quark stars were formed when a regular star's core collapsed and turned into a very dense object.

Another kind of exotic star is called a black hole. Black holes are made from leftover remnants of very massive stars that have collapsed in on themselves. Their gravity pulls everything inside of them, including light. That's why they are often called "black" holes.

Overall, exotic stars are just a little bit different from the stars you see in the sky. But they're still really important to scientists who study space and are trying to learn more about what's out there!
