ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Expanded crater

An expanded crater happens when something very big and strong smashes into the ground, like a giant rock from outer space or a bomb. When this happens, it creates a hole in the ground that is deeper and wider than it would have been if something smaller hit the same spot. The force from the impact makes the ground around the hole spread out and make the hole bigger. It's like when you drop a big rock into a bucket of sand and the sand goes everywhere and the hole gets bigger. When scientists study these expanded craters, they can learn more about what happened when the big thing hit the ground and how it affected the Earth.
