ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Eye dominance

Eye dominance is when one of your eyes is stronger than the other when you're looking at something. Imagine a superhero team where one hero is stronger than the other hero in the group. So just like that, one of your eyes is the superhero and the other is the sidekick.

Your brain uses your eyes like a camera to take pictures of things you see, but having two eyes helps create a 3D image. Your superhero eye takes the lead in controlling the focus and the other eye helps out by filling in the details like a sidekick.

To find out which of your eyes is the superhero, you can do a little test. Hold out your hands straight in front of you at arm's length, with your fingers overlapping like you're forming a small triangular hole. Focus on an object in the distance like a clock or picture on the wall, and with both eyes open, look through the triangle you made with your hands. Then, close one eye and see if the object is still in the triangle. If it is, the eye you closed is the sidekick.

Eye dominance can affect things like sports, especially when aiming, shooting or throwing. So, it's important to be aware of which eye is the superhero and practice using it for activities like archery and shooting.
