ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fast blue optical transient

Fast blue optical transients are very bright flashes of blue light that last for only a very short time. They usually last for less than a second and appear in the sky without warning. Scientists study them to learn about stars and galaxies that are far away from Earth. These flashes happen when a star suddenly gets much brighter and then fades away quickly after that. They can be brighter than any other star in the sky and are really exciting for scientists to study!
