Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland election, 1953
Okay kiddo, so there were three countries called Rhodesia, Nyasaland, and Northern Rhodesia that were controlled by the British. The people who lived there didn't have a lot of say in how things were run. So some important people got together and said, "Hey, what if we make a big country out of these three countries and the people who live there get to vote for their leaders?" They called this big country the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland.
In 1953, they had an election to decide if the people wanted this big country to happen. People who were for it were called "federalists" and people who were against it were called "separatists." The federalists promised that this big country would be good for everyone and make things better. The separatists didn't trust the people who were in charge and didn't think it was a good idea.
So people all over Rhodesia, Nyasaland, and Northern Rhodesia got to vote by marking on a piece of paper who they wanted to win. The federalists won the election and the big country was created. But not everyone was happy about it and there were a lot of disagreements. Eventually, the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland broke apart into three separate countries again.
