Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland election, 1962

Okay kiddo, so a long time ago in 1962, there was a place called the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. The people who lived there didn't all get to have a say in who got to make the rules and be in charge.

So they decided to have an election! An election is like when you get to vote for your favorite food or toy, but instead of that, in this election the grown-up people got to vote for who they wanted to make the rules and be in charge.

It was a very important election because it would decide who got to be in charge of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland. It was also a bit of a problem because not everyone got to vote. The grown-up people who lived in Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland got to vote, but the ones who lived in Southern Rhodesia didn't.

When they counted the votes, they found out that most of the people who voted wanted to have more say in how things were run. This made the people in charge worried because they didn't want to give up their power.

So, even though the people had voted for change, the rulers didn't listen. Eventually, things had to change anyway, but it took a lot of hard work and patience from the people who wanted things to be different.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
