ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fen

Fen is like a very wet and soggy place where the ground is super soft, and you might even sink if you step on it. It's kind of like jumping onto a pile of mushy leaves after it has rained a lot.

Sometimes, you might see tall grasses and reeds growing all over the fen area, and some parts might look like small ponds or bogs. You might even spot some animals like ducks, beavers or muskrats swimming in them or birds like marsh wrens or marsh sparrows nesting in the tall grasses.

Fens happen when there is a lot of water in the ground and not enough room for it to drain out. The water stays there for a long time, causing the soil to become very soggy and wet. This can happen in low areas like valleys or where the soil is made up of clay or peat.

Fens are important because they can help clean the water that may be polluted. The water in the fen will move slowly through the soil, and the plants there can absorb any pollutants and clean the water before it flows into other places like rivers or lakes.

So, even though fens might look like a big, wet, and messy place, they are essential for keeping our environment healthy and clean.
