ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fifth wheel coupling

So, you know how sometimes when you play with your toys you need to connect different things together to make a big thing? Like if you want to make a train with different parts, you need to connect the parts together.

Cars and trucks are kind of like toys for grown-ups. Sometimes they need to connect different parts too. For example, when a truck needs to pull a long trailer full of stuff, it needs to hook up the trailer to the truck.

That's where the fifth wheel coupling comes in. It's a special kind of connection point that lets the truck connect to the trailer. It's called a fifth wheel because it looks like a wheel that would be the fifth one on a vehicle, if there actually was one.

The way it works is kind of like a puzzle. The truck has a special plate on the back that matches up with the fifth wheel. The fifth wheel is on the trailer and it has a little pin that sticks up. The pin goes into a hole in the plate on the back of the truck and locks in place.

With the fifth wheel coupling, the truck and trailer can move together like they are one big vehicle. That way, the truck can easily pull the heavy trailer wherever it needs to go.
