ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Filibuster

Okay kid, imagine your teacher telling your class they are going to vote on a new rule for recess. You want to play dodgeball but some of your classmates want to play kickball. If you know you won't get enough votes for dodgeball, you might try to talk for a really long time until recess is over. That way, no one gets to play anything and you all have to go back inside. That's what a filibuster is in the government.

It's when one person in the Senate talks for a really long time to delay or prevent a vote on a bill they don't like. They can talk as long as they want about anything they want, and it can be annoying to everyone else who wants to get stuff done. But they can only do it as long as they can keep talking without taking a break. Once they stop, the Senate gets to vote on the bill. It's kind of like a big talking game where the person who talks the longest wins. But it can also be frustrating because it can stop important bills from getting passed.
