ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Film adaptation

Have you ever read a book that you really loved and wanted to see it come to life on a screen? Well, that is what film adaptation means! When a movie studio decides to turn a book (or even a stage play or comic book) into a movie, it is called a film adaptation.

Think of it like a chef following a recipe to cook a meal. The book is the recipe and the movie is the meal. The director of the movie reads the book (or script) carefully and tries to make a movie that is as close to the book as possible. This means that they will try to keep the same characters, plot, and setting.

However, sometimes the director can't include everything in the book in the movie because movies are usually shorter than books. This means that they have to leave some parts out, like some of the characters or scenes. This can be tricky because some people might be upset that their favorite part of the book wasn't included in the movie.

In the end, when you watch a movie that is a film adaptation, you get to see your favorite characters and story play out in front of your eyes, just like you imagined when you read the book.
