ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Fire damper

Okay kiddo, have you ever seen one of those big metal boxes in a building that has a pipe going into it? That's called a duct! The duct is like a path for air to go through so that the air can get into different rooms in a building.

But what happens if there's a fire? Well, we don't want the fire to spread through the ducts and into other rooms, do we? That's where the fire damper comes in!

The fire damper is like a giant door that sits inside the duct. When it's cold and there's no fire, the door is open so that the air can flow through the duct. But if a fire starts nearby, the fire damper senses the heat and closes the door to stop the fire from spreading through the duct.

So basically, the fire damper is like a superhero that protects the different rooms in a building from the bad guy (fire) getting in through the ducts!
