Okay kiddo, have you ever tried to make a fire by rubbing two sticks together really fast? That's basically what a fire plough is, except for instead of two sticks, you use one stick and a flat piece of wood.
So, you take the stick and rub it back and forth really fast on the flat piece of wood. The friction created by the rubbing makes small bits of wood dust start to form at the tip of the stick. This dust has been heated up so much that it is actually starting to turn into ash.
Eventually, if you keep rubbing fast enough, the dust will get hot enough to start glowing red. When that happens, you quickly blow on it to help catch the rest of the kindling on fire, and voila! You have a fire!
It can take a lot of energy and practice to make a fire plough work, but it's really cool to see how simple tools can create something as powerful and useful as fire. Just remember to be safe and always have an adult around to supervise when using fire!
