Fission product yield

When we break an atom, it produces smaller pieces called fission products. It's like breaking a toy into many little pieces. But different atoms break into different types of fission products, depending on what type of atom it is and how we break it.

For example, when we break uranium atoms, it produces fission products like iodine, cesium, and strontium. When we break plutonium atoms, it produces fission products like barium and krypton.

This is important because different fission products have different properties. Some are radioactive and can be harmful to living things, while others are not. So scientists study what types of fission products are produced when we break different atoms, to understand the risks and benefits of using nuclear energy.
