ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flag burning

Okay kiddo, so you know how in school you learn about different symbols that represent our country, like the American flag? Well, some people believe that burning the American flag is a way to express their freedom of speech and their disagreement with the government.

But other people feel really angry and hurt by seeing the flag burned because it feels like disrespecting something they value and love.

It's kind of like if you drew a picture that you really liked and someone came and ripped it up in front of you. You'd feel really upset, right?

So, while some people think it's okay to burn the American flag to make a point, other people think it's not respectful and should not be allowed.

In the United States, people have the right to express their opinions and beliefs, but sometimes people disagree on what is okay to do and what is not okay to do.
