ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Flood stage

Okay, kiddo, let me explain what flood stage is. Flood stage is when too much water has filled up a river or a stream or a lake.

Imagine a river like a big pipe. When lots of rain or melting snow or ice fills up the river, it's like trying to pour too much water into the pipe. The water spills out onto the land around the river.

So, when the river starts to overflow and the water level goes above the normal level, that's when we say the river is in flood stage. It means that the water has gone past its usual banks and can cause problems like washing away roads, crops, and houses.

That's why when we hear that there's going to be a big storm, we need to watch out for flood warnings and be careful around rivers and streams.
