ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Food history

Well, kiddo, food history is all about learning how people have been eating and cooking different foods throughout history. Just like how you might learn about history in school, food history is about the stories of how people in the past used to eat and cook.

Some foods have been around for a very long time, like fruits and vegetables that grow in the ground, and people have been using them for thousands of years. Other foods, like chocolate or pizza, are more recent inventions that have been around for a few hundred years.

Sometimes, the way people eat and cook also changes depending on where they live or what time period they’re in. For example, people who lived a long time ago might not have had access to modern tools and appliances that we use today, so they had to cook their food in different ways. They might have also had different tastes and preferences than we do now, so their food might have been made differently or with different ingredients.

By learning about food history, we can understand how people used to live and what their cultures were like. We can also learn about how different foods and cooking techniques have evolved over time, which can help us appreciate the food we eat today even more. Plus, it’s just fun to learn about all the different kinds of food that people have enjoyed throughout history!
