ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Food storage

Okay, imagine you have a lot of toys to play with but you can't play with them all at once. You want to save some for later so you can enjoy them later on. So, you decide to store them in a toy box or a closet until you're ready to play with them again.

Food storage is kind of like that, but instead of toys, we're talking about food. When we buy food from the grocery store or get it as leftovers from a restaurant, we can't always eat it all right away. We need to save some for later so we don't waste it and can eat it again when we're hungry.

There are different ways to store food, and it depends on the type of food you have. For example, some foods like fruits and vegetables need to be kept in the refrigerator to stay fresh longer. This is like putting your fruit snacks in the fridge to keep them from getting stale.

Other foods like pasta, rice, or cereal come in boxes or bags that we can use to store them in. We can just put them in our pantry or a kitchen cabinet until we're ready to cook or eat them. This is like putting your race cars back in their box until you want to play with them again.

We also have to be careful of how long we're storing food though. Just like how toys can get old and not fun to play with after a while, food can go bad and not safe to eat if we store it for too long. So, we have to follow the expiration dates on the food packages and throw away any food that's gone bad.

In summary, food storage is like putting our toys away so we can use them later, but instead, it's with food so we can eat it again when we want. We can store food differently depending on what we have, like in the fridge or pantry, and we have to be careful not to keep it too long or it might not be safe to eat anymore.
