Canning

Okay kiddo, have you ever wanted to save your favorite fruits or vegetables for a long time? Well, canning is a way grown-ups do that!

You'll need a few things to go canning: a big pot with a lid, clean jars with lids and bands, a jar lifter, a funnel, and sometimes a special tool to help you get the air bubbles out of the jars.

First, you'll want to choose what you want to can. You can choose almost anything, from fruits like strawberries and peaches, to veggies like green beans and tomatoes.

Next, you'll want to prepare your jars. Wash them really well in hot soapy water and rinse them out. Then, place them in a big pot with enough water to cover them up by about an inch, and boil them for about 10 minutes to make sure they're super clean.

While your jars are boiling, you can prepare your fruits or veggies. Wash them and cut them up if needed, and then cook them if you want to or add some sugar or spices for extra flavor.

Now you're ready to fill up your jars with your prepared fruits or veggies. Use your funnel to make sure you don't make a mess, and fill the jars up to a certain point called the 'headspace' - this is where the jar curves in a bit near the top.

Once your jars are filled up, you can use the special tool (if needed) to get rid of any air bubbles in your jars. Then, wipe the rims of your jars clean with a towel, and put on the lids and bands.

Now you're ready to can your jars! Put them back in the big pot with enough water to cover them up by about an inch, and boil them for a certain length of time depending on what you're canning. This will seal the jars and help them last for a super long time, sometimes even up to a year!

After your jars have boiled for the right amount of time, turn off the heat and let the jars cool down for a bit in the water. Then, carefully use your jar lifter to take them out and let them cool down even more on a towel. You'll hear a 'ping' noise when they seal properly!

Now your fruits or veggies are all set to be stored for a long time, and you can save them for a special occasion or eat them whenever you want!
