ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Footnote

Do you remember when you were learning how to write letters and you wanted to add something extra to a word or a sentence? Maybe you wanted to explain what that word means or you wanted to say where you learned that information? To do that, you might have added a little number or symbol at the end of the word or sentence and then wrote your extra information somewhere else on the page. That thing you added at the end of the word or sentence is just like a footnote.

In writing, a footnote is a little number or symbol that you put at the end of a word, sentence or paragraph to show that there is extra information or explanation that goes with it. This extra information or explanation is written at the bottom of the page or at the end of the article or book, just like you wrote your extra information somewhere else on your page.

Footnotes are used to give more details about something in your writing, or maybe to show where you got your information from. They help make your writing more accurate, clear and easy to understand for your reader, just like when you added extra information to your letters.
