ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Formication

Formication is when a person feels like something is crawling on or under their skin, even though there isn't actually anything there. It's like when you pretend that a bug is walking on your arm, but you know it's just your imagination.

For many people, formication is caused by drugs or medications that affect the nervous system. It can also be a side effect of withdrawal from drugs or alcohol. In some cases, it's a symptom of a medical condition like diabetes or multiple sclerosis.

While formication can be really uncomfortable, it's important to know that it isn't real. Even though it feels like something is crawling on you, there's actually nothing there. Sometimes just reminding yourself of that fact can help you feel a little bit better. If your formication is bothering you, talk to a doctor or healthcare provider. They can help you figure out why it's happening and how to treat it.
