ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Foxing

So, when you have a book or a paper that is really old, sometimes you might notice some brown or yellowish spots on it. That's called foxing!

But do you know why those spots happen? Well, it's because of tiny little living things that like to eat paper called fungi. Yep, just like how mushrooms are fungi that grow in soil, there are also fungi that grow on old paper.

And when those fungi grow on the paper, they release some chemicals that can stain the paper and make those brown or yellow spots show up. It's kind of like getting a stain on your clothes after eating something messy.

Now, foxing doesn't always mean that the paper is ruined. You can still read the words and enjoy the book or the paper even with those spots. And there are some ways to take care of it, like keeping the book or paper in a dry and cool place to prevent more fungi from growing.

So, if you see foxing on an old book or paper, don't worry too much! It's just a natural part of aging and can still be enjoyed just the same.
