ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Free convolution

Okay kiddo, let me try to explain what free convolution means. Imagine you have some toys, let's say some blocks and some balls. Each toy is like a number, and just like you can add the number of blocks and the number of balls together, you can add two numbers together.

Now let's imagine you have some friends, and each of your friends also has their own set of toys, just like you do. Your friend's toys are like another set of numbers.

When we want to add your toys and your friend's toys together, we need to use something called free convolution. Free convolution is like a game where we take some blocks from your toys and some balls from your friend's toys, and we put them all together.

But we have a rule in this game - we can't repeat any of the toys. So if you and your friend both have a yellow ball, we can only use one yellow ball in the final result.

And when we're done playing the game of free convolution, we end up with a new set of toys that combines your toys and your friend's toys without repeating any of them.

So that's basically what free convolution is! It's a game we play to add together two sets of numbers or toys without repeating any of them.
