ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freedom of the press in the Kingdom of Italy

Okay kiddo, so you know how when you draw a picture or write a story, you want to show it to your family and friends so they can see what you made? Well, imagine if someone said you couldn't show it to anyone because they didn't like what you drew or what you said. That wouldn't be fair, right?

That's where something called "freedom of the press" comes in. Press means the news and information that people share with each other through things like newspapers, magazines, and the Internet. In Italy a long time ago, there was a king who didn't always let people share the news and information they wanted to, because he wanted to control what people thought and believed.

But then, a group of people called "journalists" who wrote for newspapers and magazines, started speaking out and saying it wasn't fair for just one person (the king) to decide what people could read and learn about. They wanted everyone to be free to share their ideas and opinions without being punished.

Eventually, the king realized it was important to have freedom of the press so that people could think for themselves and make their own decisions. So he allowed journalists to write what they wanted and people could read and talk about it freely. And that's why we have freedom of the press today - so we can share our ideas and opinions without being told what to think or believe.
