ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freeze brand

Imagine you have a special marker that can draw on cows without hurting them. This marker uses really cold temperatures, like the ones you might feel when you touch a freezer. When you touch your skin to a freezer, it can hurt a little bit, but the cows don't feel the same way because their skin is tougher.

Instead of drawing shapes or pictures with this special marker, we make designs using special metal shapes that are kept very cold in a freezer. These shapes are put against the cow's skin, and the cold temperatures from the shape make the cow's skin turn white and kinda puffy. This doesn't hurt the cow either, just like how your skin would turn red and puffy if you stayed outside in the sun too long, but without the hurt.

Once the design is finished, it looks like a big snowflake on the cow's skin. This is called a freeze brand. Farmers might do this to their cows so they can tell which cow belongs to which farmer. The design won't go away unless the cow's hair falls out or grows back, so it's kind of like a permanent tattoo for cows.
