ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Freighthopping

Freighthopping is when someone rides on a train without paying for a ticket or having permission to be on the train. It is very dangerous and can be illegal. People who do it are called "hobos" or "train hoppers".

Trains are big and heavy machines that travel on tracks called rails. They go all over the country carrying things like food, clothes, and other stuff that people need. Usually, people buy a ticket to ride on the train, but some people jump onto the train when it slows down or stops at a station. This is called freighthopping.

Freighthopping can be really dangerous because trains are not designed for people to ride on or jump onto. The train can move suddenly, jerk around, and be very loud. You could fall off and get really hurt or killed. Plus, train companies and the police can get angry if they catch someone freighthopping because it's against the law.

In short, freighthopping is a really dangerous and illegal way to try to travel for free, and it's better to find safe and legal ways to get where you need to go.
