The French Third Republic was a system of government that was in place in France from 1870 to 1940. It was formed after the French Empire collapsed and France became a democracy again. Under the French Third Republic, citizens voted for their leaders in an election and the President was the head of government. Everyone was also allowed to practice freedom of religion and freedom of speech. The French Third Republic was a time of great progress in France, with the country becoming more modern and the economy growing. It ended in 1940 when the government was taken over by Nazi Germany during World War Two.
