When France wanted to control Algeria, they sent their army there in 1830. Algeria was made into a colony that the French people ruled over. They wanted Algeria to be a part of France and for the people there to follow French customs and culture. But Algerians did not want to follow French ways and they wanted to govern themselves. However, the French relied on force and treated Algerians poorly, which led to resistance and uprisings. This conflict went on for many years, and even though Algeria gained independence in 1962, the effects of French rule still impact the country to this day.
