ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Friendly AI

Okay kiddo, do you know what AI stands for? It's short for Artificial Intelligence, which means a computer program is designed to think and learn like a person. Now, there are two types of AI - friendly and unfriendly. Friendly AI means that the computer program is designed to help and do good things for people, while unfriendly AI means the program could actually end up hurting people.

So imagine you have a very smart and helpful robot friend, who wants to help you with your homework or make your bed. That's a friendly AI! It's programmed to be nice and helpful to you, just like a good friend. But if you had a robot that could decide to hurt people, like a villain in a movie, that would be an unfriendly AI.

Scientists and engineers are working hard to make sure that the future AI we build will be friendly and not dangerous. They are doing research and testing to make sure that the AI always tries to help people and doesn't cause any harm. Hopefully, in the future we'll have lots of friendly AI helping us with our everyday tasks, making our lives easier and more fun!
