Fullerite

Fullerite is a kind of material that is made up of tiny little balls called molecules. These molecules are made of carbon atoms, which are the building blocks of things like pencils and diamonds.

Now imagine a soccer ball. It's round and has black and white patches all over it. Well, these fullerite molecules are like tiny soccer balls, but instead of patches they have hexagons and pentagons all over the surface. This kind of pattern is called a 'buckyball' after the scientist Buckminster Fuller who first thought of the idea.

Sometimes, instead of just one ball, the fullerite molecules can stick together and form larger structures. These larger structures also have the same soccer ball-like shape, but they can be made up of hundreds or even thousands of fullerite molecules all stuck together. These bigger structures are called 'nanotubes'.

Fullerite is a really cool material because it has some very special and useful properties. For example, it is extremely strong and can withstand a lot of pressure. It can also conduct electricity really well, which makes it useful in things like microchips and electrical wiring. Plus, it's really light and so can be used to make lightweight materials like bike frames and tennis rackets.
