ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Functional disorder

Okay kiddo, let me explain what a functional disorder is!

So you know our body has many parts, right? And they all work together to help us move, talk, think, and feel. Sometimes, these parts may not work the way they are supposed to, and that's when we get a problem in our body or brain.

But sometimes, even when all the parts are working fine, our body or brain may still have a problem. This is what we call a functional disorder.

It's kind of like when you have a toy that looks perfectly fine from the outside, but it just doesn't work when you try to play with it. It's not broken, it just doesn't function properly.

For example, some people may have a functional disorder in their stomach. Their tummy might look and feel normal, but they might have trouble digesting food or feel really sick even if they didn't eat anything that could make them sick.

Functional disorders can be tricky to diagnose because doctors can't see anything wrong with the body part that's causing the problem. But they can still treat the symptoms to help the person feel better.

Does that make sense, kiddo?
