ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Functional illiteracy

Functional illiteracy means that you can’t read or write very well. People who are functionally illiterate may be able to write a few simple words, but they struggle with more complex tasks like writing a story or reading a long book. They may also struggle understanding directions or instructions, and even things like filling out forms or applying for a job. Someone who is functionally illiterate may feel embarrassed and have a hard time finding work or participating at school.
