ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Galactic bulge

Okay kiddo, let me try to explain it in a simple way. Imagine you have a big ball of playdough and you start pushing it in the middle with your thumb. The middle part gets bigger and bigger and starts to bulge out. This is kind of like what happens in a galaxy.

Galaxies are huge collections of stars, gas, and dust. Some galaxies have what's called a "galactic bulge". The galactic bulge is the big, round part at the center of a galaxy, where most of the stars are packed together. It's like the heart of the galaxy.

In the Milky Way, our galaxy, the galactic bulge is shaped like a peanut. Scientists think that the bulge was formed a very long time ago, when the galaxy was still young and all the stars were just starting to form. It's kind of like a time capsule that gives us a glimpse into the very early stages of our galaxy.

So, that's the galactic bulge - a big, round, peanut-shaped group of stars in the middle of a galaxy!
