ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gamma ray

Gamma rays are like superheroes! They are really powerful energy beams that zoom around the universe at super-fast speeds. These energy beams are like little packets of light - they have no weight and no size, but they pack a mighty punch!

Gamma rays are made when atoms (tiny things that make up everything around us) smash into each other, or when stars explode in space. When this happens, they release tons of energy, and some of that energy comes out as gamma rays.

The amazing thing about gamma rays is that they can actually shoot through solid objects, like walls or even our bodies! So scientists use special tools to detect and study them. They can tell us a lot about what's happening in space, like where stars are being born or dying, or what kinds of materials things are made of.

So next time you hear about gamma rays, remember that they might be shooting past you right now, invisible to the naked eye but always on the move!
