Okay kiddo, so imagine you and your friends want to pick a leader for your club. You all have different ideas about who would be the best leader, so you decide to have an election.
Now, traditionally, you might just have everyone vote for one person and the person with the most votes would win. But in a garrat election, things work a little differently.
In a garrat election, instead of just voting for one person, people get to rank their choices in order of preference. So they might say, "I want Billy to be the leader first, but if he doesn't win, then I want Suzy to be the leader."
Once everyone has ranked their choices, you count up all the votes. But instead of just looking at who got the most votes, you start by looking at everyone's first choice. If any candidate got more than half of the first-choice votes, then they win right away.
But if nobody gets more than half, then the candidate who got the least number of first-choice votes is eliminated, and their votes get redistributed to their supporters' second choices.
This process of eliminating candidates and redistributing their votes to other candidates continues until one candidate finally gets more than half of the votes.
So basically, a garrat election lets people really think hard about who they want to lead the group and give everyone a fair shot at winning, instead of just having a popularity contest.
