Gel extraction

Gel extraction is like taking the candies you like out of a big bowl of candy mixed with some candies you don't like.

Imagine you have a bowl of candy with red and blue candies, and you only like the red ones. But you can't just pick them out with your hands because they are all mixed together. You need to find a way to separate the red ones from the blue ones.

In science, gel extraction is a way to separate a piece of DNA that you want from a mixture of DNA pieces. You start with a mixture of DNA pieces in a gel, just like the mixed up candies.

To extract a specific DNA piece, you first run an electric current through the gel. The electric current helps the DNA go from the top of the gel to the bottom. The DNA pieces all move at different speeds depending on their size.

Now, let's say you want to extract the red candy, which is the DNA piece you want. The red candy has a specific size just like the DNA. You can use a special tool called a pipette to cut out the gel around the red candy.

Once you have the gel piece that has your red candy or your DNA piece, you can use a mixture of chemicals to dissolve the gel, just like melting the gummy candy to take out the red candy. Once the gel is dissolved, you are left with the specific DNA piece you wanted.

So that's how gel extraction works. It's like taking the candy or DNA piece you want out from a bunch of mixed up ones.
