A genetic bottleneck happens when a species (like humans or animals) has very few individuals left in the population. This can happen because of natural disasters like fires, floods, or other extreme events. When this happens, only some of the genetic information (the information that makes us all different) will get passed on to the next generation. Because only a few individuals are left, that means that the genetic information in the population will be limited. This can cause health problems or other issues in the population since there is less genetic diversity.
