Indigenous peoples of the Americas are people who have been living in what is now the Americas (North, Central and South America and the Caribbean) for thousands of years. Their ancestors were some of the first people to arrive in the Americas. Genetic history tells us that the first people in the Americas shared a common ancestor. This ancestor lived in Asia about 25,000 - 15,000 years ago. As the people moved south and east, they divided into smaller groups and spread out over the Americas. Each group developed its own culture, language, and traditions over time. Through genetic tests, we can tell that the ancestors of the indigenous peoples of the Americas had different genetic backgrounds, but they are all related to each other.
