Genomic counseling is when a person talks with a doctor or genetic counselor to learn more about their DNA. DNA is the code that makes each person unique, and it's part of every cell in your body. Every time a person wants to make a medical decision, they need to understand what their DNA says. Genomic counseling helps people make decisions about their health by learning more about their DNA. A genetic counselor will talk to the person, ask questions about their family's health history, and explain what their DNA means for their health and any risk factors or diseases a person might get in their lifetime. They may ask about their eating habits and activity levels, too. After the counselor answers the person's questions and explains the information, the person can then feel more prepared to make the best decisions for their health in the future.
