ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geocentric Coordinate Time

Have you ever heard of time zones? When we talk about what time it is, we use one time zone for where you are and another time zone for where I am. But did you know that there is a kind of time that is the same no matter where you are on Earth or even in space? That kind of time is called geocentric coordinate time, or TCG for short.

You see, time is actually a kind of measurement. We use it to measure how long an event lasts or when that event happened. But measuring time is a little bit trickier than measuring length or weight. We can't just use a ruler or a scale to measure it. Instead, we use clocks. And just like with length and weight, there are different kinds of clocks.

The clocks that we use to measure time on Earth are based on the rotation of the Earth around its axis. This is called a solar day, and it lasts about 24 hours. But the Earth doesn't rotate at a perfectly even rate. It gets a little faster and slower depending on things like the tides and the movement of the moon. That means that the length of a solar day actually changes over time. So if we want a kind of time that stays the same no matter what, we need to use a different kind of clock.

That's where geocentric coordinate time comes in. TCG is based on the movement of the Earth as it orbits around the sun. This means that it doesn't rely on the Earth's rotation, so it doesn't change over time. TCG is always the same, no matter where you are in the universe.

Now, geocentric coordinate time might sound a little bit complicated, but we don't really need to worry about it in our day-to-day lives. We use solar time, which is based on the Earth's rotation, because it's easier for us to understand. But TCG is really important for things like astronomy and space travel, where we need a kind of time that can be used everywhere in the universe.

So next time you hear someone talking about geocentric coordinate time, just remember that it's a special kind of time that doesn't change no matter where you are in the universe, like a super-powered clock!
