ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geologic record

Ok kiddo, imagine the Earth is like a really big book, and every time something happens on Earth, like a volcano erupting or a dinosaur walking around, it gets written down in the book. And over a really, really, really long time, all those things that happened keep getting written down in the book.

That big book is called the geologic record! It's like a history book that tells us what happened on Earth millions and millions of years ago. Scientists study the geologic record to learn about what life was like back then, what kinds of rocks and minerals were around, and even what the weather was like.

But here's the thing, the geologic record is really, really old. It goes back billions of years! And because it's so old, sometimes it's hard for scientists to read the writing in the record, or even find the record in the first place.

So, scientists have to use special tools and techniques to study the geologic record. They might use drills to dig down into the Earth to find layers of rock and sediment, or they might study fossils to learn about animals that lived a long, long time ago.

But thanks to the geologic record, we can learn about the history of our planet and all the amazing things that have happened on it!
