ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Geology

Geology is like being a detective of the earth. Do you know how you sometimes go digging in the ground and find rocks or fossils? Well, geologists do that too, but they do it on a much bigger scale!

Geology is about understanding how the Earth works and how it has changed over time. Geologists study rocks, minerals, and everything in between to learn about Earth's history.

You see, the Earth is made up of different layers, sort of like a layer cake. The top layer is called the crust, and it's the part we live on. Then there's the mantle, and beneath that is the core. Geologists study all these layers to understand how they relate to one another.

They also study how the Earth moves, like when we have earthquakes or volcanoes. Geologists help us understand why these things happen and how we can prepare for them.

Another cool thing geologists do is study fossils. Fossils are like clues that help us understand what life was like on Earth millions of years ago. Geologists study these fossils to piece together the history of the planet.

Overall, geology is like solving a puzzle. Geologists study rocks, minerals, fossils, and more to learn about the history of the Earth and how it works. It's a pretty fascinating field of science!
