ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Georges Polti

Georges Polti was a man who came up with a list of different types of stories that people like to hear, read or watch. He called this list "The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations."

Imagine you are playing with your toy cars. You might have a toy car that is broken and needs to go to the toy mechanic to get fixed. This is a problem that needs to be solved. Stories often have a problem that needs to be solved too, but there are different kinds of problems.

Georges Polti thought about all the different problems that happen in stories and gave them names. Imagine you have a big box that has 36 different kinds of toys in it. These toys are all different types of problems that can happen in stories.

For example, one toy might be a hero who needs to save someone from danger. Another toy might be a hero who needs to find treasure. Another toy might be a hero who needs to stop a villain from doing bad things. These are all different types of problems that happen in stories, and they are on Georges Polti's list.

When someone is making or telling a story, they can use one, some, or all of the toys in the box. By doing this, they can create a story that is interesting and entertaining to people.

Georges Polti's list is still used today by people who make stories. It's like a big box of toys that they can use to create all kinds of different problems and stories that people like to hear, read or watch.
