Georgia in the American Civil War

Okay, so a long long time ago, there was a big war in America called the Civil War. It was fought between the people in the North who thought it was wrong to have slaves and the people in the South who wanted to keep their slaves.

Georgia was one of the states in the South and it was pretty important because there were a lot of big cities and lots of plantations where people grew crops like cotton. These plantations had lots of slaves who worked really hard without getting paid or treated very well.

At the beginning of the war, Georgia joined with the other Southern states to form the Confederacy, which was like a club of states that wanted to keep their slaves. Georgia sent lots of soldiers to fight on the Southern side and they had some pretty big battles, like the Battle of Chickamauga and the siege of Atlanta.

But eventually, the South started losing the war and things started to get really tough for Georgia. The Union army, which was the army from the North, started to take over more and more of the state. They destroyed a lot of the farms and plantations and many people had to leave their homes and become refugees.

Finally, in 1865, the war ended and the North won. Georgia had to give up its slaves and become part of the United States again. It was a really hard time for people in Georgia and in the whole country, but eventually things started to get better and people worked to rebuild their homes and communities.
