ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

German Continental Deep Drilling Programme

So, there are a bunch of grown-ups who are very interested in studying deep down in the Earth to learn more about it. To do this, they decided to dig a really deep hole in Germany, called the German Continental Deep Drilling Programme.

This hole is really, really deep. It goes down over 9 kilometers! Imagine stacking 60 big towers on top of each other! That's how deep it is! And the scientists dug it to learn more about the Earth's structure and how it works.

It's like when you play with your toys, you sometimes like to take them apart to see how they work, right? Well, these scientists wanted to do the same thing, but with the Earth!

To do this, they collected rocks from deep down and studied them. They also measured things like temperature and pressure to learn more about what's happening deep inside the Earth.

So, in a nutshell, the German Continental Deep Drilling Programme is a big, deep hole where scientists can learn more about what's going on inside the Earth.
