ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Germanisation

Germanisation is when people of other cultures adopt German language, customs, traditions and lifestyle. It's like when you go to a new school and make friends with kids who have different hobbies and speak in different way, but over time you start to do things their way because you like their activities and they way they talk.

Now imagine there's a country called Germany where people speak German, eat certain types of food, and celebrate certain holidays. But there are also other countries nearby, and sometimes people from those countries move to Germany. At first, they might still speak their own language and cook their own food, but if they stay in Germany for a long time, they start to learn German and adopt the customs there.

However, sometimes this process can be forced or happen in a negative way. In history, there were times when Germany conquered other countries and tried to make the people there more like Germans. This meant they would force them to stop speaking their own language and force them to start speaking and acting like Germans. This is wrong and not a good way to treat others.

So, in essence, germanisation is the process of adopting German language and culture either voluntarily over time or coercively through force.
