Gimbal lock

Gimbal lock is like when two arms of a toy are stuck together and can't move independently anymore. In gimbal lock two of the axes, or directions, that something is supposed to move and rotate in are stuck together and can't act separately. This means that instead of two directions of movement, you now only have only one direction.
