The Goa Inquisition was a series of trials and punishments that were carried out by the Portuguese Empire in Goa, India. They were looking to punish people whose beliefs or practices they saw as not following their own Christian beliefs. People were brought to trial, and if found guilty, would be punished harshly with fines, imprisonment, torture and even death. Sometimes the punishments even spread to whole communities as the Portuguese tried to force their beliefs onto everyone in the area. The Inquisition ended in 1812, after hundreds of people had been punished for their beliefs.
