ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

God of the gaps

God of the gaps is a way of thinking about science and our understanding of the world. It means that when something is not understood or explained, people say that it must be "God's work". Basically, it means a person believes God is responsible for things we don't understand, and is like a gap in our knowledge. For example, if someone asked why the weather is the way it is, and we couldn't answer, someone might say that "it must be God's work." However, science tries to explain everything and find answers to our questions so that we can understand the world better. So, instead of saying "God must be responsible," scientists look at the facts, use evidence, and come up with explanations that make sense.
