ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Gore (road)

Gore is the area between two roads or highways where the cars can’t drive. It’s kind of like a middle zone that helps separate the different lanes of traffic.

You might also hear people call it a “median” or a “divider”. The gore is usually made up of grass, dirt, or sometimes even concrete barriers.

It might seem odd that you can’t drive in the gore, but it’s actually very important for safety. Without the gore or divider, cars could accidentally drift from one lane into the other and cause a crash.

So, next time you’re on the road and see the gore, remember that it helps keep everyone safe by making sure we stay in our own lane.
